Hershey_Kiss_PB.jpg The Hershey Factory
  • Started out as a way for Milton Hershey to create a chocolate coating for his caramels
  • With the new mass-production system during this time period, they were able to make affordable chocolate that wasn't exclusively for the wealthy and began mass producing chocolate bars in 1900
  • The Hershey Chocolate company is the largest producer of chocolate in North America, and employs over 12,000 employees
  • More than 80 million Kisses are produced everyday at its factories.

Almond_Hershey.jpgTrue Story Behind How KISSES Recieved Their Name
When asked about how Hershey's KISSES recieved their name, they are quoted on their website as saying, "While it's not known exactly how KISSES got their name, it is a popular theory that the candy was named for the sound or motion of the chocolate being deposited during the manufacturing process."
  • This, however, is just what Hershey's wants you to think.
    • Back in the early 20th century, the word "Kiss" was used to describe a large group of bite size candies not related to Hersheys
      • When Hersheys Kisses first came out under the term “chocolate kisses” this could have meant anything small and chocolate tasting
    • It wasn't until after WW1 that the word Kiss began being associated with the Hershey Kiss
  • Because the term "Kiss" was such a general term for small bite-sized candy, trademark examiners refused to allow Hershey to trademark the word KISS until 2001 when it was finally approved.
    • All trademark applications that had the word KISS were excluded until this day
    • This is the document showing when Hershey's filed for a trademark and when they finally got it approved:
hershey[1].jpgInteresting Facts
